Governor Greg Gianforte announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is awarding Montana $2.7 million to enhance the Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Fort Harrison.
“This funding allows us to honor the sacrifices of those who have served our nation,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Each grave is a testament to courage and commitment, and with this expansion, we ensure that the legacies of our heroes and their families are properly memorialized.”
The Montana State Veterans Cemetery currently serves over 22,000 veterans and their family members. The new funding will enable the addition of 300 pre-placed crypts, 800 columbarium niches, 500 cremains gravesites, and improvements to landscaping.
Honoring veterans has been a priority for Gov. Gianforte since taking office. He has recognized hundreds of Montana veterans through the Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation, which acknowledges those who have made significant contributions to their communities. Nominations for the 2024 award are currently being accepted at recognizeveterans.mt.gov.
