Montana State University Extension to Host Inaugural Cattle Academy in Miles City

Montana State University (MSU) Extension is set to launch the first Cattle Academy, a biennial regional conference for beef cattle producers, on November 19-20 at the Custer County Event Center, located at 72 Garryowen Road.

The Cattle Academy aims to equip beef cattle producers with valuable insights on contemporary topics, current research, and innovative technologies essential for beef cattle production and management.

Keynote speaker Taylor Brown, owner of Northern Broadcasting System, will headline the event, which will also include a variety of expert-led sessions. Topics will cover the beef market outlook, a Beef Quality Assurance certification course, calving challenges and successes, beef nutrition, grazing strategies, water quality, heifer development, bull fertility, and estate planning.

Megan Van Emon, an MSU Extension beef cattle specialist and conference chair, explained that the Cattle Academy was created to better serve producers and stakeholders in eastern Montana. “This conference was developed with regional Extension faculty to provide a broad range of topics encompassing beef cattle and ranch management,” Van Emon said.

The conference will commence at noon on Tuesday, November 19, and continue at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20. Registration is required by November 15, with options available for students and meal inclusions.
