Six Montanans working across music, painting, ceramics, glasswork, engraving and violin will receive the state’s highest arts honor this year, the Montana Arts Council announced.
The 2026 Governor’s Arts Award recipients are Missoula musician Jeff Ament, Bozeman landscape painter Clyde Aspevig, Bozeman stained glass artist David Fjeld, Helena ceramicist Sarah Jaeger, Bozeman violinist Carrie Krause, and Big Sandy engraver Diane Scalese.
The awards, presented every two years in the governor’s name and administered by the Arts Council, recognize Montanans and organizations whose work in or on behalf of the arts has benefited the state. Recipients are chosen for artistic excellence, dedication to Montana, and sustained contributions to the state’s cultural community.
“Montanans have a unique ability to depict the natural beauty of our lands, mark significant moments in history, and represent the sights and sounds of the vibrant culture across our communities,” Gov. Greg Gianforte said in a statement. “For generations, the Treasure State has stirred the creativity of writers, artists, and musicians, and we’re glad to honor these individuals for their talents.”
A ceremony honoring the recipients is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Old Supreme Court Chamber of the state Capitol in Helena. Lt. Gov. Kristen Juras will present the awards, and the event is open to the public, with a reception to follow in the Capitol rotunda. The ceremony will be broadcast on Television Montana, the state’s government broadcasting service.
