Flathead Valley Community College Approves Contract for New President

KALISPELL, Mont.—The Flathead Valley Community College Board of Trustees has unanimously approved an employment agreement with Dr. Deborah Kish Stephan, who will become the college’s next president on Jan. 1, 2027.

Stephan will succeed longtime President Jane Karas, who has led the college for more than two decades.

The board’s approval follows Stephan’s appointment on Sept. 28 and concludes a national search that attracted 90 applicants.

Stephan currently serves as president of the Brandon Campus of Hillsborough College in Florida, where she oversees an institution serving more than 17,000 students.

Before joining Hillsborough College, she served as vice president of academic affairs at Northwest Florida State College, gaining experience in academic administration and institutional leadership.

Stephan holds a law degree from the University of Florida, a doctorate in education and a master’s degree in business administration.

The presidential search included a review of 90 applications, with a search committee selecting 11 semifinalists for interviews. Four finalists were subsequently recommended to the Board of Trustees for consideration.

The transition marks a leadership change for Flathead Valley Community College following Karas’ more than 20 years of service.

Stephan is scheduled to assume her duties at the beginning of the new year.
