Governor Greg Gianforte presented the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation to three distinguished veterans this week, continuing his fourth annual 56 County Tour with ceremonies in Stillwater and Carbon counties.
“The dedication of these Montana veterans, both in military service and their contributions to our communities, exemplifies the spirit of service,” Gov. Gianforte said. “As I travel across the state, it is an honor to recognize their sacrifices and commitment to the Treasure State.”
The Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation celebrates veterans who have served the country honorably and made a significant impact in their communities. This year, 39 veterans will be honored, following 31 recipients in 2021 and 51 in 2022. Each awardee receives a state flag flown over the Montana State Capitol and a letter of appreciation.
During a ceremony in Columbus on Tuesday, Gov. Gianforte honored Webb Mandeville, a U.S. Army veteran and Mayor of Columbus. The governor commended Mandeville for his ongoing community service, which includes participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program, the Kiwanis Club, and the Flag Program. Mandeville has also been instrumental in building Little League Baseball fields and serving as a volunteer firefighter.
“You have demonstrated a deep commitment to your community,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Your service extends well beyond your military career, and your efforts in maintaining the town and supporting local programs are truly commendable.”
In Red Lodge, the governor recognized U.S. Army veterans Henry Tuell III and Jason Burr. Tuell, a Vietnam War veteran with 28 years of service, was honored for his numerous awards, including the Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Soldiers Medal, and the Purple Heart. Burr, who served 15 years with the U.S. Army Special Forces, was also acknowledged for his contributions.
Both Tuell and Burr are involved with Operation Second Chance (OSC), a Maryland-based non-profit that supports wounded, injured, and ill veterans and their families. They volunteer to organize retreats and outdoor activities, including hunting and fly fishing, for combat-wounded veterans.
At the Elks Lodge in Red Lodge, Gov. Gianforte expressed his gratitude to the veterans and their families, saying, “Thank you for your extraordinary service. It is my honor to recognize you with the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation.”
The governor’s tour continues as he honors more veterans across the state, celebrating their service and dedication to Montana.
