Governor Greg Gianforte visited the HER Campaign last week to showcase the organization’s vital work supporting survivors of human trafficking through their residential programs.
“Human trafficking is a despicable, heartbreaking crime, but thanks to dedicated Montanans like Sammy and organizations like the HER Campaign, survivors are offered resources and hope,” Gianforte stated. He emphasized the state’s commitment to ending human trafficking and holding perpetrators accountable.
During his visit to the HER Campaign’s safe house, the governor learned about the resources available for women in crisis. The safe house provides a three-to-five-day shelter focused on crisis intervention, offering survivors a secure environment, basic necessities, and guidance for their next steps.
“We’re really serving as an emergency room for survivors. Without emergency stabilization, we can’t connect those in need with families or other resources that could provide long-term care,” said Sammy Higgins, co-founder of the HER Campaign.
For those wishing to extend their stay, the organization offers an Emergency Shelter program that provides care for 30 to 90 days, addressing key issues that can lead to relapse and focusing on holistic therapy that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit.
As part of their ongoing mission, the HER Campaign is expanding training for families to create safe spaces for survivors.
The Montana Department of Justice has reported a staggering 1,400 percent increase in human trafficking cases since 2015, rising from seven recorded cases in that year to 106 in 2022. In response to this crisis, Governor Gianforte increased penalties for trafficking offenses last year and provided prosecutors with enhanced tools to bring traffickers to justice.
The governor’s visit underscores the collaborative efforts needed to combat human trafficking and support survivors across the state.
