Montana abortion ballot measure aims to boost Tester

National Democrat aligned groups  are actively working towards placing a state constitutional amendment on abortion on Montana’s ballot next year. The move is aimed at bolstering the re-election prospects of Democratic Senator Jon Tester, who is identified as one of the most vulnerable Senate incumbents in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This initiative in Montana aligns with a broader national strategy employed by Democrats to bring abortion-related issues to the ballot in key states. Abortion-rights measures have proven to be influential in mobilizing Democratic voters in recent elections across various states, contributing to the party’s success on the issue leading into the 2024 elections.

In late November, advocates for abortion rights, including the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, initiated the procedural steps in Montana to commence the lengthy process of placing a constitutional amendment on the November 2024 ballot. The proposed amendment, while not yet finalized, allows unlimited abortion and claims to prevent “the government from denying or burdening the right to abortion.”

Behind the scenes, Senator Tester has reportedly been supportive of this effort, according to nation news outlet Axios. This move underscores the strategic importance of the abortion rights issue in shaping the electoral landscape and garnering support for Democratic candidates in critical states.
