Montana Launches Installment Plan

Starting in 2025, Montanans will have the option to pay their property taxes in smaller, more manageable chunks. Under a new program created by House Bill 830, property owners can make seven monthly payments instead of the traditional twice-a-year lump sums due in May and November.

This change, made possible by legislation passed in 2023, provides an alternative payment schedule aimed at reducing the financial stress of property taxes. Montanans who wish to participate in this program for the 2025 property tax cycle can apply now.

The program has drawn significant support, particularly from groups like the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Montana.

Although the new program is particularly beneficial for seniors, it’s designed to help other groups as well. Individuals living on fixed incomes or dealing with tight budgets will also benefit from the flexibility the monthly installment option provides.

By spreading payments out over several months, the program aims to help Montanans balance their property tax obligations with other essential living expenses. With this change, the state hopes to reduce financial pressures and make homeownership more sustainable for its residents.
