Jon Schemmel is set to assume the role of director of athletics at the University of South Dakota, starting January 2, 2024. Bringing with him a decade of experience in Division I athletic departments, Schemmel’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for USD.
Expressing her enthusiasm, President Sheila K. Gestring remarked, “This is an exciting time for USD. Our athletics program continues to reach new heights, and I am confident that with Jon’s leadership, we will further that success.”
Schemmel has a history with USD, having previously served as the senior associate athletic director for development from 2012 to 2017. During this period, he played integral roles in the senior executive teams for the USD Foundation and the USD Department of Athletics, contributing to strategic planning for both entities.
In expressing his gratitude, Schemmel stated, “Thank you to President Gestring, the search committee, and all who were part of the search process. My family and I are ecstatic to return to USD and the Vermillion community. This is truly a full-circle moment for us. To have the opportunity to come back to a place that has meant the world to me and my family is incredibly exciting and humbling. I look forward to reconnecting with the entire Coyote community.”
Schemmel’s return to USD follows his recent role as president and CEO, as well as vice president of institutional advancement, at Dakota State University, where he served since 2021.
Before his tenure at DSU, Schemmel held the position of senior associate athletic director and assistant vice president for development at Miami University. Additionally, he worked as a consultant for College Sports Solutions, focusing on external revenue aspects of collegiate athletic departments and conference alignment, and actively participated in various search processes with Division I athletic directors.
Schemmel, a San Diego State University graduate with a B.A. in public administration, has a diverse background as a student-athlete, having played Division I and Division II baseball. His professional career commenced in Major League Baseball, where he played for the New York Mets and San Diego Padres organizations.
