Bondi, 57, served as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, where she became recognized for her strong stances on consumer protection, criminal justice reform, and anti-drug efforts. During Trump’s first impeachment trial, Bondi served as one of his legal defense team members, arguing against accusations that Trump had abused his power in his dealings with Ukraine. Trump was acquitted in the Senate.
A graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, Bondi started her career in law as a prosecutor before transitioning to private practice. She gained political prominence when she ran for Florida Attorney General in 2010, defeating her opponent in a heated race. During her tenure, she took part in several high-profile legal cases, including leading the charge against opioid manufacturers, and represented Florida in legal challenges related to the Affordable Care Act.
Bondi’s nomination comes at a time when the Justice Department faces numerous critical challenges, including issues related to criminal justice reform, national security, and civil rights. Her strong legal background and deep connections within the Republican Party, as well as her previous involvement in Trump’s defense team, are likely to shape her approach to the role.
