Wyoming families will soon have greater access to educational choices as the first phase of the Wyoming Education Savings Account (ESA) application process goes live on January 1, 2025. The ESA program, established under the Wyoming Education Savings Account Act signed into law in March 2024, aims to empower families by providing financial support for a range of educational expenses.
The initial phase of the program invites families to visit the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) ESA webpage and submit basic information to express interest. No documentation is required at this stage, and applicants will receive confirmation emails upon submission. A Pre-Application Overview is available to help families prepare.
In April, phase two will begin for families who expressed interest. At this stage, applicants will need to submit documentation to verify eligibility, including proof of age, residency, and financial records. ESA funds will be available for use starting July 2025.
Under the ESA program, eligible students will receive $6,000 annually starting in the 2025-26 school year to cover educational expenses such as private school tuition, curriculum, tutoring, extracurricular activities, and other approved costs. Families with household incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines qualify for the scholarships.
“I am thrilled to continue making strides on my campaign promise to support the growth of school choice in Wyoming,” said State Superintendent Megan Degenfelder. “Together, with the Wyoming Legislature, we are growing the opportunity for families to choose the educational experience that is best for their students, and this is only the beginning.”
The ESA program reflects a growing commitment to school choice in Wyoming. Wyoming Representative Ocean Andrews (R-Laramie) praised the initiative as a meaningful first step.
“The launch of Wyoming’s school choice program marks an important step toward empowering families with more educational options,” said Andrews. “While the program’s current scope is limited, it sets the stage for future progress. I’m hopeful we can expand school choice opportunities to ensure every Wyoming family, regardless of background or income, has access to the education that best fits their needs.”
The Wyoming Department of Education will launch the Education Service Provider (ESP) application in early 2025, allowing schools and organizations to apply as approved service providers for ESA funds. Families and interested parties are encouraged to sign up for ESA Updates on the WDE website to stay informed about program developments.
With the ESA program’s launch, Wyoming takes a significant step toward expanding educational opportunities for families, ensuring greater flexibility and support in meeting the diverse needs of students statewide.
