On Sunday’s episode of CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senator JD Vance (R-OH) leveled serious accusations against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, alleging that Walz misrepresented his military service for political advantage.
During the broadcast, anchor Dana Bash highlighted Walz’s extensive 24-year military career, noting that Walz had chosen to remain in service beyond his retirement eligibility following the September 11 attacks. Bash asked Vance if he honored Walz’s service.
Vance responded affirmatively, stating, “Of course, Dana, I honor his service. I’ve never criticized what Tim Walz did when he was in the military. My criticism is directed at his retirement decision and, more importantly, his misrepresentation of his record.”
Vance continued, “Governor Walz has been captured on video making misleading claims about his military experience, such as asserting that he carried a gun in combat, despite not having served in a war zone. He has also been seen nodding in agreement when others described him as an Afghanistan veteran, instead of clarifying the truth—that while he served honorably, he did not serve in a combat zone.”
The Senator emphasized that his critique is not of Walz’s service itself but of what he perceives as dishonesty for political gain. “I served in the United States Marine Corps, and I take pride in my service. I have never exaggerated or misrepresented my record for electoral benefit. I believe that’s exactly what Tim Walz did, and I find it to be scandalous behavior,” Vance said.
