Tester Hides from Harris, Focuses on Abortion Amid Tight Race

Montana U.S. Senator Jon Tester is positioning the protection of abortion as a cornerstone of his campaign to maintain his seat, the last Democratic hold in statewide office in Montana. His efforts include campaigning alongside Planned Parenthood officials, launching advertisements advocating for abortion rights, and endorsing a proposed state constitutional amendment to secure abortion access.

However, Tester has notably avoided discussing Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail. With control of the Senate hanging in the balance, Tester is seen as prime target for Republicans this fall.

Despite Tester’s focus on reproductive rights, his hesitance to publicly endorse Harris reflects the unpopularity of her administration in Montana. Political analysts suggest that aligning with Harris could energize Democratic voters, yet the incumbents have chosen a cautious approach, avoiding strong ties to national politics. During a recent campaign event, Tester emphasized that the desire to protect abortion access transcends party lines.

While Tester has tried to focus on local issues, his opponent, former U.S. Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy, is leveraging Trump’s early endorsement to rally support. Sheehy frequently links Tester to Harris and other Democratic leaders, framing the incumbent’s voting record as a reflection of a failed agenda.

As the election approaches, both Tester  faces pressure to engage more directly with Democratic voter bases, particularly on issues like reproductive rights, which are seen as pivotal for mobilizing support. Despite this, his strategy has leaned towards maintaining a low profile regarding national figures, including Harris, which some analysts argue may hinder their electoral chances.

In a recent rally in Bozeman, Tester highlighted his commitment to abortion, drawing a crowd of supporters and showcasing a flood of “Republicans for Tester” advertisements aimed at expanding his appeal. The race remains intensely competitive as both parties ramp up efforts to sway voters but recent polls show Sheehy leading Tester.
