Former Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey is gaining momentum in the race to succeed the late Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate. According to a recent Politico poll, Garvey, running as a Republican, has garnered the support of 19% of likely California voters, placing him second behind Congressman Adam Schiff at 28%. A mid-November poll by the Policy Institute of California had Garvey at 10%, trailing both Schiff (21%) and Rep. Katie Porter (16%).
In a recent tour of the Salton Sea, Garvey highlighted his priorities for the region, emphasizing people first, followed by ecological considerations, and the development of a potentially significant resource for battery production and cleaner energy. The Salton Sea gained attention after a U.S. Department of Energy analysis revealed its potential as one of the largest lithium brine deposits globally.
Garvey also visited the U.S.-Mexico border, engaging with Border Patrol agents and social workers. To secure victory in a state that hasn’t elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006, Garvey is expected to need the support of Trump backers.
On his campaign website, Garvey’s platform emphasizes giving parents more educational choices, reducing taxes, increasing police budgets, and advocating for a robust national defense. His approach aims to resonate with voters as he navigates a competitive political landscape.
