With the retirement of Chief Justice Mike McGrath and Associate Justice Dirk Sandefur, attention is focused on the candidates vying to fill these roles, including Cory Swanson.
Cory Swanson is a fourth-generation Montanan and a seasoned attorney with extensive experience in both public service and private practice. He received his law degree from the University of Montana School of Law and has since built a distinguished career in the legal field.
Swanson joined the Montana Army National Guard in 1997 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He is currently a Colonel in the National Guard. Cory Swanson served three deployments to the Middle East and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
He went on to serve as a Deputy Attorney General under Republican Tim Fox in 2013 and 2014. Swanson is currently the County Attorney for Broadwater County, where he has handled a wide range of cases, demonstrating his legal acumen and commitment to the rule of law.
As a candidate for the Montana Supreme Court, Swanson aims to bring his extensive legal experience and deep understanding of the law to the state’s highest court. Cory is committed to ensuring fair and impartial justice for all Montanans and seeks to uphold the integrity of the judicial system. He describes his philosophy as “judicially conservative” as opposed to “judicially activist.” Cory’s focus is on maintaining a balanced and independent judiciary that serves the interests of the people. The general election will be held on November 5th.
