Daines Introduces Bill to Hold ATF Accountable

Senator Steve Daines played a role in reintroducing the “ATF Accountability Act,” aiming to enhance transparency for gun owners in Montana regarding regulations established by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The ATF is involved in a clandestine classification review process where determinations are made about whether a specific firearm falls under the regulations of the National Firearms Act. These decisions and the justifications behind them are frequently disclosed only to manufacturers through private communications. This lack of transparency creates uncertainty for both gun owners in Montana and firearm manufacturers, particularly when coupled with the ATF’s reluctance to establish final public rules regarding classification.

“For too long unelected bureaucrats at the ATF in Washington, DC have been making decisions on the classification status of firearms behind closed doors. We need transparency and accountability at the ATF so law abiding Montana gun owners and gun manufacturers are never left in the dark,” said Senator Daines in a statement released by his office.
