Governor Announces Appointments to Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission

Governor Greg Gianforte announced a series of appointments to the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission, reinforcing the state’s commitment to managing its natural resources and outdoor heritage. The appointees, including one new member and three continuing commissioners, bring diverse expertise to guide policies on Montana’s fish, wildlife, and recreational opportunities.
The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission, established to oversee the state’s fish and wildlife management, consists of seven members appointed by the governor. The commission sets policies for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), ensuring sustainable management of the state’s natural resources for hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Commissioners serve four-year terms and represent different regions of Montana, balancing local perspectives with statewide interests.
New Appointment: Ian Wargo, Region 1 Commissioner – Ian Wargo, a Kalispell native, has been appointed as the Region 1 Commissioner, representing northwest Montana. A civil engineer and licensed guide, Wargo brings a deep connection to Montana’s outdoor traditions and a professional background in infrastructure and land use. His term will run through January 2, 2029. “Ian’s experience as a guide and his roots in Kalispell make him an excellent fit to represent Region 1’s unique needs,” Governor Gianforte said in a statement.
Three current commissioners were reappointed to their roles, ensuring continuity in leadership:
  • Brian Cebull, Region 5 Commissioner (Billings): Cebull, co-founder of GTUIT, LLC, an innovative company in the oil and gas exploration industry, will continue to serve southeast Montana. Known for his business acumen, Cebull has been a vocal advocate for balancing resource development with conservation. His term extends through January 2, 2029.
  • Bill Lane, Region 7 Commissioner (Ismay): A Livingston native and ranch owner in eastern Montana, Lane brings a rural perspective to the commission. His experience in agriculture and land management informs his approach to wildlife and habitat issues in Region 7. Lane’s term will also run through January 2, 2029.
  • KC Walsh, Region 4 Commissioner (Martinsdale): Walsh, former Executive Chairman of Bozeman-based Simms Fishing Products, continues to represent central Montana. His expertise in the outdoor industry and passion for angling align with the commission’s mission to promote sustainable recreation. Walsh’s term will conclude on January 2, 2029.
The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Montana Senate during its next session. Until then, the commissioners will begin or continue their work, addressing pressing issues like chronic wasting disease, public land access, and fishery management.
