U.S. Sen. Steve Daines on led a letter to major airline executives urging them to increase flight options from Montana to Nashville, Tennessee, ahead of the FCS National Championship Game.
Daines was joined by Sen. Tim Sheehy and U.S. Reps. Ryan Zinke, R-MT-01, and Troy Downing, R-MT-02, in sending the letter to the CEOs of Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.
The request comes as Montana prepares for a historic postseason matchup between the University of Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State University Bobcats. The two rivals are set to meet in the playoffs for the first time, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division I Football Championship in Nashville on Jan. 5, 2026.
“History will be made this Saturday in Bozeman, Montana,” the lawmakers wrote. “For the first time, the University of Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State University Bobcats football teams will meet in the postseason with the winner earning themselves a spot in the NCAA Division I Football Championship in Nashville, Tennessee.”
While the outcome of the game has yet to be decided, the delegation noted that a Montana team will be heading to Nashville regardless, creating a surge in demand for travel.
“Although Montana will be a state divided this weekend, both Cats and Griz fans can agree that there’s nothing like watching and cheering on your team in-person,” the letter states. “Unfortunately, current air service options to Nashville from Montana in the days leading up to the game are limited and liable to sell out quickly.”
The lawmakers asked airlines to increase service to ensure fans have an opportunity to attend the championship game in person.
“By increasing access to affordable air service, you will be giving Montana fans of all ages the chance to witness history,” they wrote. “As proud Montanans, we hope all fans will be able to take part in this special moment with their team.”
The letter concludes with a nod to the rivalry shared across the state: “Thank you for your consideration and may the best team win.”
