Montana State University’s Spirit of the West marching band will join the Bobcat football team in Frisco, Texas, for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national game on Monday, Jan. 6, thanks to an outpouring of support from donors.
Leading the effort was a $200,000 cornerstone gift from MSU alumnus and Big Timber native Jamie Alexander and his wife, Bianca. Alexander, a 1983 graduate and co-founder of investment firm Jasper Ridge Partners, was inspired by comments from band director Nathan Stark highlighting the significance of the trip for many band members, some of whom had never flown before the band’s last trip to Frisco in 2022.
Alexander reflected on his own transformative experience as a student, when a donor-sponsored trip to a STEM event in Silicon Valley marked a turning point in his life. He expressed hope that the band’s journey to Frisco could similarly inspire its members.
The Alexanders’ gift was also made in honor of Bobcat quarterback Tommy Mellott, head coach Brent Vigen, MSU Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Muhlbeier, and the entire Bobcat Nation.
The donation, combined with contributions from other supporters, has been critical to MSU’s fundraising campaign to cover the band’s travel expenses. MSU’s budget does not include playoff travel for the band, and the NCAA does not fund band travel. The total cost for the trip—including a chartered flight, lodging, meals, and ground transportation—is estimated at $300,000.
MSU President Waded Cruzado praised the Alexanders for their generosity, noting the significant impact it will have on the band members. The Spirit of the West, founded in 1983 and now celebrating its 40th anniversary, comprises nearly 200 students from all MSU colleges. Known for their dynamic performances, the band is a fixture at Bobcat home games and other events in Bozeman.
Under the direction of Nathan Stark, the band spends over 200 hours each semester rehearsing and performing, forging strong connections among its members. Their trip to Frisco marks another milestone in the band’s legacy of dedication and spirit.
The Spirit of the West will lead Bobcat fans in the fight song during the championship game, bringing their signature energy and pride to the national stage.
